Materials recycling facility, Mansfield
Main contractor: Norwest Holst
The Midlands & North regional operation of BRC Reinforcement has successfully supplied custom engineered mesh and prefabricated mats to Norwest Holst, which is building an £8m materials recycling facility at Mansfield, for Veolia ES Nottinghamshire Ltd. Due to be completed in November 2008, the facility will process mixed recyclable waste into separate materials for onward recycling.
BRC Reinforcement was contacted to review the conventional ground slab reinforcement detail. Originally there were two layers of A393 to the bottom of the slab with one layer in the top. In addition there were loose bars to be added over the top of the piles.
Using the Engineers design information, BRC converted the two layers of A393 into one layer of 8mm bars @ 100mm centres to optimise the steel reinforcement design area, and by using a larger sheet size of 5.9m x 3.15m site fixing time was greatly reduced.
Around the perimeter where extra steel was required, BRC produced a sheet with alternating 8mm and 10mm bars to again optimise the steel reinforcement design area and this sheet was manufactured at a size of 5.6m x 1.8m, to eliminate the need for cutting. The top layer remained as a single layer of A393, but to reduce lap build up, flying end fabric was used.
The loose bars over the piles were converted into prefabricated mats to further reduce site fixing time. As the steel fixer on site said; “It really helped this job motor!”
Richard Watkins, Sub Agent for Norwest Holst, commented on BRC Reinforcement’s technical support and contribution to the project; “The custom designed mesh supplied by BRC saved us time and money and ensured we stayed on a very tight schedule.”
