ASDA superstore, Somerset

Main contractor: Midas Construction

Midas Construction's Somerset & North Devon Office last year completed a 32 week shell build programme for CDF (Highbridge) Ltd. to build a new Asda store. With a 5th November 2007 store opening date, the timing was always going to be tight but – with assistance from BRC South West - converting an element of a 145T order for loose bar into special mesh, Midas Construction saved a considerable amount of time!

As Midas Construction says; "Due to poor ground conditions, the floor slab was designed as a two way spanning flat slab supported by driven precast concrete piles with expanded heads at approximately 4.5 metre centres. Using special mesh mats, which were detailed and supplied by the Plymouth office of BRC Reinforcement, Midas Construction were able to save approximately two weeks time over a loose reinforcement bar solution."

BRC Reinforcement manufactures special mesh in sheet sizes in bay specific dimensions that eradicate site-cutting or wastage. As Midas Construction continues: "A selection of mats were detailed to provide exactly the correct concentration of reinforcement to each zone within the slab therefore minimising the total tonnage. In addition, this solution by BRC Reinforcement allowed for excellent quality control."
